ABSTRACT
THEelaboratetempleof"TheLions"wasprobably erectedonanearliersite,aspotteryoftheMiddleKingdomhasbeenfoundinitsnearneighbourhood.If,however,therewasaMiddleKingdomtemplehereithas vanishedlongsince;butitisquitepossiblethatthe presentsanctuarywasbegunintheXVIIIthdynasty, forAmenhotepIIImadearock-cutshrinenearby. TheexistingtemplewasdedicatedtothegodsAmon andRa-Harakhti,whichalsosuggeststheXVIIIth dynastyastheperiodwhenthetemplewasbegun,though thedecorationisoftheXIXthdynasty.
