THEgreatrocktempleofAbuSimbel(Ibsambul)is thefinestofalltherocktemplesintheNileValley, whetherinEgyptorNubia.Ifiteverhadpylonsthey havenowdisappeared,andtheoutercourtissosmall astobeinsignificant,sothatthegreatfac;adewithits giantfiguresburstsuponthespectatorwithoutanypreliminarybuildings.Belzonihadthegloryofbeingthe firsttoexcavatethisenormouscavern,whichhecompared forsizewiththetombofSethyIintheValleyofthe TombsoftheKings.
