ABSTRACT
In the shadow theatre a large number of myths are disseminated and perpetuated. Most of these are derived from the Hindu-Javanese classical literature which flourished at the courts of East Java from between the tenth and the fifteenth centuries. Indigenous non-Hindu texts, composed in subsequent centuries in Bali, may also be drawn on, but these are rarely, if at all, enacted nowadays.
