ABSTRACT

AZERBAIDZHANIS Own names: Azerbaidzhanly, Azeri (the latter is now considered archaic); Russian names: Azerbajdzhantsy, Aderbidzhantsy. The Azerbaidzhanis were formerly also known as (Azerbaidzhani) Turks or Tatars. They were listed simply as Turks' in the first Soviet census. The majority live in the Azerbaidzhan SSR and the Nakhichevan ASSR within the Azerbaidzhan SSR (though not in the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Province, where the population is predominantly Armenian); there are also substantial communities in the neighbouring Armenian and Georgian SSRs and in the Daghestan ASSR, and smaller groups in Central Asia and Kazakhstan.
