ABSTRACT

WedescribedinChapter6howinBAtherearesetsofsyllabically differentvariantswhicharefunctionallyequivalentbutwhichhave aspecificsocialdistribution(mostclearlyinthecaseofthe illiteratepopulation).Inthischapter,weaimtoexplainthe choiceswhichliteratespeakersfromvariousBa~rainicommunities makebetweenthemembersoftheseequivalentsetsofsyllabic variants:whichvariant-typestheyconsistentlyselect,whichthey avoid,andwhy.Inparticular,weshallbeaddressingthefollowing relatedquestions:

(b)whatthesourceforthe'novel'variants,withwhicheach co~munity's'dialectal'varianthasbecomevariable,could be:e.g.giventhattherearesome'ArabwhohaveCCvCv(C) categorically,andsomewhohaveitvariably,which variant(s)havebeenintroducedintothedialectbythose with'variable'grammars?
