ABSTRACT

T h e earliest thing that I remember was the c l ip-c lop of the mi lkman ' s horse as it went down T h o m a s Street i n the -early morn ing . W e l ived at Rameta , a large square red-brick V i c t o r i a n house on the corner of C o m m e r c i a l R o a d and Thomas Street, Me lbou rne . It looked like a doctor 's house, w h i c h it later became, though it has now been pul led d o w n and a filling station put in its place; but I remember comparat ively little about the place where I was born as we moved from there when I was five years o f age and went to l ive i n the country. However , I do recall the G e r m a n bands p lay ing i n the K i n g ' s D o m a i n (a park) on Sundays. T h i s must have been before 1914, as w i t h the advent o f the Firs t W o r l d W a r the bands disappeared from our lives.
