ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to attempt a systematic exploration of these relations. In the first part, we consider models as tools for measurement (for the quantitative representation of reality), recapping on the development of urban modelling in an attempt to outline the transformations which have occurred in our 'view of the world', i.e. the focus of interest and objectives pursued, and the implications that this has had for systems of urban performance indicators. We then move on to loolung at simulation models as tools of evaluation, and therefore as performance indicators.
