ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will look at the conditions in exporting countries which drive workers to go abroad. Some of the factors usually mentioned are the great gap in income between Japan and these countries, the population explosion, and the problem of unemployment. It hardly needs to be pointed out again here, but in 1988 Japan's per capita GNP was 5.8 times that of South Korea, 10.8 times larger than Malaysia's, 9.7 times larger than Brazil's, 21.0 times that of Thailand, 33.4 larger than the Philippines', 47.8 times larger than Indonesia's, 60.1 times that of Pakistan, 63.7 times greater than China's, and an incredible 123.6 times that of Bangladesh (World Bank, Table 1).
