ABSTRACT

In March 1904 a cyclonic storm swept up the Bay of Bengal devastating much of what is now the independent country of Bangladesh. It spent itself in the hills of North Cachar and finally blew itself out in the Brahmaputra valley. In April of that year the early rain, so vital to the paddy seedling nurseries, was late materializing, and when it came it was in insufficient quantity. May began excessively hot. Lhuyietsiiii, now in the last days of her third pregnancy, continued as usual to discharge her daily household chores. Krusietso had returned to Khonoma from one of his trading forays abroad and would stay there until the child was born.
