To the people of Nagaland Phizo was a hero not a failure, but did they understand and appreciate the nature of the man and his mission?
, He never got nationalism out of his system. He began as an angry young man and remained to the end of this life true to his belief in the Nagas' God-given right to sovereignty. He rose to extreme heights upholding the Naga Nation. He was its voice. He symbolized its hopes and fears. His achievements, his dreams, some of which were patently unobtainable, were often overshadowed by controversy and disappointment. And along the way he learned a fundamental lesson: to be human is unfortunately also to be fallible.
