ABSTRACT

Indian sculptors and painters set a high value on the expressive qualities of the human body, at the cost of landscape painting which is one of the great achievements of Chinese art, or of the mathematically exact decorations which are so characteristic of Islamic art. It may be an overstatement to say that Hindu and Buddhist art are the most 'iconic' of all Asian art - yet it is certainly true that India has developed a sophisticated iconographic language which has proved capable of communicating nearly everything: myths, abstract concepts, emotions, and actions. Iconism is a characteristic of all Indian art.
