ABSTRACT
Among Frits Staal's manifold interests, the problems oflanguage have always occupied a prominent place. Here is a modest contribution in that sphere. 1
Poetics in India perhaps grew out of Grammar. 2 As we shall see in this paper, some of the finest discoveries in this field, even in later times were made under the influence of Grammar, which indeed provided Indian thought in general with its technical basis as Mathematics did in the West - a subject where again Staal's contributions are among the most valuable.
