ThesecondnewwingoftheLSTMopenedon5May1978.TheMaegraith WinghousedtheDepartmentsofTropicalPaediatricsandInternational CommunityHealth.Thesedepartmentsrepresentedthenewvanguardofthe School.Inparticular,InternationalCommunityHealthstretchedthescopeof tropicalmedicine,aspractisedfromLiverpool,andultimatelychallengedthe legitimacyofthetitle'tropicalmedicine'fortheSchoolandthediscipline.The developmentsintheSchoolsince1966broadenedthedefinitionoftropical medicineandacknowledgedthatthepracticeofmedicineinthetropicswasof necessitypartofitsremit.Inoperationalterms,thetropicalpaediatricsinitiative reinforcedthegeographicaldefinitionoftheactivitiesoftheSchool. InternationalCommunityHealthsoughttodefinetheactivitiesoftheLSTMnot bygeographybutbysocio-economicstatus.WithinthecontextoftheSchool, themeaningofthewords'tropicalmedicine'and'internationalhealth'slid looselyintoeachotherinthe1970s.Bythe1980s,internationalhealthhad becomedistinguishablefromtropicalmedicineinitsaimsandobjectives.
