ABSTRACT

Vientiane plain; Vientiane (province); 4th-6th A.D.; Lao Pako (site); chronology; pottery; iron artefacts

Archaeological survey of Lao Pako, a site on the southern bank of the Nam Ngum, c. 40 km northeast of Vientiane, and report of an excavation in three small trenches, carried out from November 1995 to January 1996. Wishes to reveal the major features and chronology of the site and to place it in its proper cultural context. The dense cultural layers with potsherds and charcoal indicate that the site was intensively occupied and that metallurgical and textile manufacturing activities were undertaken. The site provided radiocarbon dates of the 4th to 6th centuries A.D. Similarities are observed with near contemporary sites in Northeast Thailand, such as Ban Chiang, Ban Chiang Hian and Ban Na Di, which all seem to belong to the same cultural group, [mk]
