ABSTRACT
MAYwasaveryhotmonth,andanunusuallyactiveoneforthe staffattheFort,sothatIwasabletoundertakeonlytwodesert expeditions,firstlytoAjman,whereIaccompaniedthesheikhon agazellehunt;andsecondly,toDhaidh,towhichplaceCaptain Tandy,thenewPoliticalOfficer,tookmeonanofficialvisitto SheikhMohammedAli,ruleroftheBeniQitabtribe.Itwasmy ambitionwhilstinArabiatovisitRiyadh,thecapitaloftheNejd, andmeetKingIbnSaud,ifthiscouldbearranged.Permission forthevisitfirsthadtobeobtainedfromtheSaudiArabianGovernment,towhomonehadtogivereasonsforthejourney,proposed methodoftravel,proposeddateofentryintotheNejd,andthe routetobefollowed.
