ABSTRACT

Now therefore concerning the sense of hearing, we say that it also is carried out by means of that fourth pair of nerves which come from the brain, and are expanded, and form the ears, by means of which the sense of hearing is effected. Now we do not require symptoms from all the diseases which arise in the parts of the ears which are visible because they are [readilyl understood, but those which become agents that do harm to the hearing, even though no injury is visible in the cavities of the ears, must be thoroughly and clearly diagnosed. If the operation of hearing be affected, then we think that the

Page too aural nerve I is diseased; but, if it be affected together with the other members which are in the person, we say that the cause, which manifesteth itself externally, is in the brain, and that, in that case, the brain itself is affected, either as a homogeneous or as an organic member.
