OurpresentstrollwilltakeusfromHaghiaSophia throughtheoutercourtyardoftheSarayanditslower gardens.Thisarea,attheveryapexoftheoldcity,is almosttotallycutofffromtheturbulentlifeofmodem Stamboul,shieldedasitisbyouterwallsoftheSaray. Walkingthroughthesequietgardens,itisdifficultto imaginethatthiswasthesiteoftheancienttownof Byzantium.
