ABSTRACT

The final step in constructing a new model is its testing. As a preliminary step, a variety of social phenomena were considered in the last chapter. As a further step toward ascertaining the viability of the model developed in Chapters 11 and 12 a test was devised to see how high-school students in the US and Japan perceived differences in job situations in their own country. Do they see the agents of stratification identified in the model as being relevant to understanding the way in which their own society is stratified? The test described in this chapter is not seen as the ultimate test but as an indicator of whether the same stratification model makes sense in Japanese and American societies.
