ABSTRACT
Once started, the flow of Africans to the West Indies gathered rapidly in volume. Men and women both, were in constant demand. Mortality, through disease, ill-treatment, and torture, was abnormally high. Breeding was at a low ebb. It was not encouraged, it being cheaper to purchase imported adult slaves than to rear them. The demand for fresh cargoes of human flesh was greater therefore than the supply.
