ABSTRACT
THERE is a well-known type of caravan which is neither a merchant convoy nor a private company of independent travellers. It pertains to both, and conforms to the pattern of neither; Namely, "The Great Hajj", or annual pilgrim caravans. These have a special life and history of their own, which is as unique as the purpose they have fulfilled for more than twelve hundred years.
