ABSTRACT
It is the custom in th~ Noh performance to place the Kyogen (the Comediettas) between the Noh plays, that is to say, a Noh programme of five pieces contains three Kyogen, and that of three pieces contains one or two Kyogen. The Kyogen is meant to remove or relieve the emotional stress of the Noh, just as a satyric play was always used for the same purpose in thc ancient Greek tragedies .
