ABSTRACT

This letter of consolation (Ep. cviii), addressed to Eustochium of the most moving which came from his pen-is further interesting from its detailing the whole series of stages by which the descendant of the Gra.cchi and the Scipios travelled, up to the point of her settling in her cell at Bethlehem: the island of Pontia, Methone (south of Messenia), Cyprus, Seleucia, Antioch, Coele-Syria and Phcenicia, various spots in the Holy Land, Jerusalem, and lastly, Bethlehem, which was to be the point of departure for another tour which she made through Palestine and Egypt.
