ABSTRACT

Venice acquired Crete,2 which she held, 1206-1669: footholds in the Peloponnesus, Euboea and the Cyclades: and, nearer CP., Rodosto, Gallipoli, Heraclea and an important quarter in CPo itself.

Of the other Latin states, the Kingdom of Thessalonica3 was founded by Boniface, Marquis of Montferrat, in 1204: and took in Thessaly. But it was conquered, 1222, by the Greek Despot of Epirtls and became part of the Greek Empire of Thessalonica, 1225-37, which, 1244, was made subject to the Greek Empire of Niccea. Fiefs of Thessalonica were the Signory, then Duchy, of Athens, founded by the Burgundian Otto de la Roche,4 and the Principality of Achaia5 (Morea) by Geoffrey 1. of Villehardouin, 1209-t 18.
