§ 4. It was Maurice, 582-t602, who, in a reign of twenty years, had to weather the storm, until he was overwhelmed by it. By his marriage with Constantina, daughter of Tiberius, he ranks as the last sovereign of the house of Justinian: and though greater as a general than as Emperor, no little glory6 belongs to him: quite apart from his upright life and his truly Christian death.
