ABSTRACT

OF ALL the great estates built in the Muromachi period, only the pavilion gardens of Y oshimitsu and Y oshimasa remain today. Yet, many small temples and lodges had gardens also, like the

one that was made for Onryoken. Many of these small temple gardens survive, which is fortunate, for in them gardening reached its apex as fine art and as expressionistic art. The great estates possessed beauty, charm, and artistry along with considerable feeling, but they were, after all, gardens first of all, meant to provide the environment for the mansion of a great and Important personage.
