ABSTRACT
In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the debate on the relative merits of military drill versus physical training on the Swedish model gained momentum. Drill, in whatever form, was associated with the maintenance of good order and discipline, ensuring its place at the heart of the elementary school curriculum.
