ABSTRACT
The British and the Boers had clashed periodically since Britain had acquired the Cape of Good Hope at the time of the Napoleonic Wars. By the end of the nineteenth century the situation in South Africa was that the Boers occupied the more or less independent republics of Transvaal and the Orange Free State, while the British were settled in Cape Colony, Natal and Rhodesia.
