OLD John D. always had a good conscience. When in 1888 he was asked during one of the Senate Investigations on Trusts, whether he really believed that
“the Standard Oil Trust is a beneficial organization to the public”, he replied without hesitation: “I beg with all respect to present the record which shows that it is.” (21)
