ABSTRACT
We explained in some detail in Chapter 4 the administrative procedures of the Department and the means by which the claims of applicants are assessed. A scale of need is applied to a family unit living in the same household and the resources of the household are calculated and used to determine the amount of assistance which is granted. The earnings of members of the household are disregarded up to a maximum which varies according to the number of persons and the composition of the household. All earnings in excess of this maximum are deducted from the assistance which would otherwise be available.
