other influences were comparatively gentle and noiseless. But the victory of one type of economic organization over another was none the less effectual because it was achieved in silence1. T o use a geological metaphor, we may say that the successive layers of economic strata are the same in both cases, but that in one case the forces of political upheaval have produced a ‘fault’ which brings them more clearly to our observation.
