ABSTRACT

Many of the themes articulated in this book can be illustrated through the use of case studies of different industries. Uneven development, business cycles, rising and falling comparative advantages, industrial restructuring, a changing technological mix, and state policy are all evident in the differing historical geographies of several industries. While the specifics vary from sector to sector, the broad outlines are similar. This chapter offers case studies of four manufacturing sectors (textile and garment production, steel, automobiles, and semiconductor electronics) and two service sectors (financial services and telecommunications).
