ABSTRACT
In the history of the Spanish-American Colonies the year 1824 is the crucial one. At the beginning of that year it was still conceivable that a congress might regulate the affairs of the New World, that monarchies might arise there, or that England might negotiate the peaceful separation of some of them from Spain. On the last day of the last month these possibilities had vanished because Canning took steps to recognise three New Republics.
