THE rise of the motion picture theatres, beginning in 1905, created a demand for story pictures which reacted with revolu· tionary effect on the art of the films. The mere ability to crank a camera and develop films was no longer sufficient. Now the motion picture had to reach out for players and stories and directors. A whole creative craftsmanship had to be evolved, and all this tedious but hurried evolution had to take place in an industry tom with desperate legal wars.
