ABSTRACT

Communal life, within limits, is a potent factor in the life of the people. The impact of Western ideas is responsible for disrupting this. Under the old system, every person knew the " Head" to whom he or she was attached, and they realised their mutual allegiance and responsibility. Hence, there were, in past days, no homeless vagrants in Iboland, the family being responsible for the less fortunate relatives. The" Di Qkpala " (head) looked after the family and its common interests and properties, though he did not, in any wise, claim personal ownership of the properties or the fetishes of individual members.
