ABSTRACT

The secrets of the societies were rigorously guarded. In former days, a member proved guilty of exposing the practices of the society was punished drastically. The manner of "making maw" (spirit) "maw-napu-apu" = wandering spirit, was known only by initiates, and to reveal its procedure was to court a dreadful death, a stake being driven vertically through the body, a cruel form of impalement.
