The year following that in which he made his first entrance there, so nearly paying for the effort with his life, Mr. Hepburn, while awaltmg instructions from England, sent in the two native teachers, Khukwe and Diphukwe, with their families, that they might "hold the fort" amongst the Batauana, until more permanent arrangements could be made, " lest," as he says, "their zeal and earnestness to have the gospel should grow cold, with the hope deferred of long waiting."
