ABSTRACT
Wood varnish finishes are both decorative and protective in function. They achieve their decorative effect optically through their refractive index, coated wood appearing to be, in effect, embedded in a glass-like material. This has the effect of changing the appearance of the wood surface, darkening the apparent colour but also making the features of the wood more readily visible.
