A 1980 issue of the British Farmer’s Weekly journal offered some alternative guidelines to the Countryside Commission’s Country Code on how urban visitors could cement friendships with country folk.1 Here are a few of them:

Gates: A modern technique called zero grazing has made all gates redundant, so there is no need to bother with them. Never open a gate if you can climb over it first. If it is locked, take it off its hinges.
