ABSTRACT

Management of people is probably the single most complex and difficult aspect of management. There are four particular skills that are necessary and which should be borne in mind by all aspiring managers. The first of these is awareness of what is going on in your relationships with other people, why they are behaving in a particular way and what your influence is having on their behaviour. Motivating; you need to know what motivates people to work and what demotivates them to stop working, in order that you can use one and exclude the other from your day to day management. Communication; if you find it difficult to communicate or your communication skills are not well developed, your effectiveness as a manager will be all the more difficult. Being able to communicate at varying levels is an essential skill which needs to be acquired from the outset. Style; your style, and your ability to adapt your style to circumstances will be a significant contributor to your success.
