Bentham's Justification of the Principle of Utility by Bhikhu Parekh

How ultimate moral principles can be justified is a question that has exercised the minds of nearly all moral philosophers across the centuries, and utilitarians were no exception. Nearly every utilitarian moral philosopher from Paley to Sidgwick has asked how the principle of utility could be shown to be the only proper standard of moral judgment. In this paper I intend to single out Bentham's attempt to justify the principle of utility for detailed examination.
