ABSTRACT

Almost 40 per cent of those questioned simply wanted to fulfil their task and get the fight over and done with. 14 per cent mentioned the small group. No other reason was given with any similar frequency.1 With less specific control questions, e.g. those concerning attitudes to dishonourable discharge from the armed forces,2 or pride in one's own unit,3 the percentage of answers indicating a strong group integration rose to 80 per cent. This is a very high figure if one also takes into account the 'don't knows', but the answers merely confirm what is already known.
