Salim al-Bukhari (1851-1928), all three Damascene 'ulama' who had called for religious reform. A number of younger Muslims subsequently joined the circle, including Rafiq al-'Azm, Muhammad Kurd 'AH, Shukri al-'Asali, 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Inklizi, 'Abd al-Hamid al-Zahrawi, Salim al-Jaza'iri, 'Abd al-Rahman al-Shahbandar, and Muhibb al-Din al-Khatib — all future leaders of the Arab societies in the period before World War I. The members of the circle would meet with Sheikh Tahir, some after Friday prayers and some on other occasions, to hear his lectures on the latest scientific, philosophical and political developments.
