ABSTRACT
English Heritage was set up by the Conservative government in 1984 as a ‘QUANGO’ directly responsible to the Secretary of State for the Environment. Taken out of the Department of the Environment (DoE), to which it is still indirectly linked, English Heritage was to be the main national body concerned with the care and protection of English historic buildings and ancient monuments.
