ABSTRACT

The reflections of Generals Sherman, Castelo Branco, Rios Erefiu, and of General Colin L. Powell are compelling reminders of the challenges that all military institutions face during peacetime. They must maintain their professionalism, avoid partisan politics, and be ready to fight, just in case. As we enter the New World Order we may face a similar challenge. We may also be on the threshold of a new golden age of strategy. Just as the immediate post-World War II was one of strategic vision and creativity by statesmen, we now have the opportunity to think through and shape a democratic international order that puts an end to aggressive warfare.
