ABSTRACT
T he Revolution's early years witnessed a continuation of the reformist trend in the army. Increasing political fer· ment and the advent of war upset the process of orderly change and introduced a host of new problems and opportunities. Against a background of foreign war and internal strife. French civil and military leaders tried to combine the innova· tions produced by the Royal Army with the organizational and tactical requirements of.a mass conscript force.
