ABSTRACT
The pressure of defeat, coupled with the hope of revenge, compelled leaders of states opposed to French hegemony to reform their armies. England refined the linear system of com· bat to increase its effectiveness. Austria and Russia tried to introduce French tactics, and Prussia engineered a revolution
from above in order to reproduce the spirit as well as the forms of Napoleonic tactics.
