ABSTRACT

The ever-increasing complexities and hazards that form part of the daily life of the average police officer must inevitably lead to occasional mishaps. Errors of judgement such as excessive force used in moments of stress are easily understood by those regularly confronted with the rigours of operational policing but many of those not possessing such insight find it difficult to understand. However, there are occasions when certain police actions give rise to legitimate concern and these must be addressed in order to maintain public confidence.
