ABSTRACT
In September 1886 the most professional association football team in England, Preston North End, signed the 21-year-old West African as an amateur for FA Cup matches only. It was Wharton's impressive performance for a Newcastle and District representative team against PNE on 27 April that had prompted William Sudell, chairman of the PNE managing committee, to lure Arthur westwards - if only temporarily.
