ABSTRACT

We only have to consider recent events to see the truly international nature of terrorism and its lack of respect for national boundaries. The events surrounding the capture of Abdullah Ocalan, the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader, illustrate this. Ocalan, having been exiled from Syria, sought asylum in a succession of countries - Italy, the Netherlands, Greece and Kenya. His eventual capture by Turkish authorities triggered a series of co-ordinated protests by sympathisers in about 20 cities around Europe, and some of the protests, including a number of hostage taking incidents, were clearly terroristic in nature.
