ABSTRACT
These words, attributed to President Kenyatta, were quoted shortly before his death in 1978 by his then vice-president and soon to be successor, Daniel Arap Moi, at a speech delivered at St Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary. The statement articulated a recurrent theme of the Kenyatta period, oft-repeated in Kenyatta's public declarations and meetings with church figures as well as by a host of government officials.2
